Just wondering if anyone else would like to see latest and/or most active group discussions on the home page of MediaPRO like the forums? I know the concept of "groups" changes between various ning sites, but in the case of MediaPRO they seem to act (more-or-less) as forum topics.

But if a user makes a new discussion in a group ... for all intense purposes, the only other users that are going to see those discussions are the people who sign on while it's still listed in the latest activity. After that, the only other people who will see those new group discussions are most likely new users who are simply curious as to what the groups are for?

Granted, group discussions are listed in the right-hand column, near the bottom. But they don't seem to carry a whole lot of weight and I can't quite figure out how they are listed?

Just an observation ... does anyone else have any opinions on the group discussion usability and activity?

Right now there's no 'feed' that sums up all the group forums, so what you see in the right side is somewhat of a 'hack' which is why its inconsistent. We're hopeful the provider will come up with some better solutions for groups in the future, some are very active and others not so much. That's partly why we decided to also start the more global general forum to speed discussion along.

Gotcha ... I was wondering about that. I've worked with a few other ning sites and have found the group discussion options to be a bit lacking, so I assumed you guys had some sort of hack or custom script in place. Just wasn't sure if there were any other options or any other thoughts for keeping the group activities engaged.

Thanks

my 2¢: this was something of a conundrum for me - do I post a question into one or more groups, targeted to the interests of those in those groups, or into the main forum, where it'll get viewed by the most people (most of whom may not care or be able to answer it)?

seeing questions posted into group forums ("discussions?") could only help boost the membership of those groups. (I had to join Advertising Sales to answer a question I saw posted in it. I don't work in Advertising, so perhaps forcing me to join to answer isn't the best thing.)

Honestly its probably a good idea initially to test both and see where the best responses come from...no problem posting in both places if you want..

I don't mind doing that ... the only disadvantage is that it seems to promote a bit of stagnation in the groups since, by default, ning doesn't email group members when there is a new discussion posted. The users have to figure out how to do that on there own and since most people join the groups when they first join MediaPRO, they probably won't discover that tiny little function in the lower right-hand corner.

Meaning that veteran or active MediaPRO members will most likely never find those discussions and reply, only the new members will see them ...

I know it's a limitation of ning and should be posted on ning's developer site, but mentioning it here may also promote a creative "work round" ... who knows?

Thanks for all of your hard work on this site!
