Do you have any information that you could share with me in support of or against using the same image on the cover and within the cover story in a trade pub?
My personal opinion is that, at my magazine, this is a topic that isn't up for consideration. The photo used on the cover is never used inside the magazine. We take an entirely different photograph for the inside story.
I've seen it done both ways and won't go so far as to say that it should absolutely never be done — but it isn't acceptable to me.
Well, it's nice if you have the budget to do run different images. I've worked at enough places where I needed to put my limited budget elsewhere, so I would be clear with the photographer upfront.
if you did a fair amount of coverage at your cover shoot, you should have a good number of outtakes you could use with the article. Same shoot, yes, same shot, no.
I'd have to assume the only reason that question is asked is due to a tight budget, with which I would reply "You do what you need to do..." but it's never ideal. If it isn't custom work then there may not be an option of out takes. I can think of a couple of instances where a customer provided us with an illustration or composite image which was intended to be used on both the cover and interior. If at all possible, we'll alter the image (if allowed) to make do with what's been provided, however it's still not ideal.
by using the same image, do you mean the *EXACT* same image - if so, that could look pretty weak, however, if you are using a cropped, zoomed or variant of the image, I'd think thats perfectly fine - both as a reader and a former publisher.
