I'm trying to collect a list of magazine brands that are managing to succeed and perhaps even thrive in this economy and am finding it a daunting task. I'd love to hear suggestions!

Is this a global hunt or specific to a region Shannon :)

I suppose I'm looking to focus on north America, but really any examples will do! Thanks!

The Economist appears to be doing well, although strictly speaking it is a newspaper. I recall the Financial Times having a strong year as well, so I think that b2b, or b2c depending on your definition, brands with a strong reputation that are accesible and already known to consumers, not just business consumers, are doing relatively well. Bear in mind however that b2b in general is suffering, as any number of publiations will attest to.

Thanks -- hadn't spotted that article. I actually just found a pretty good article via minonline.com that speaks of several mags who've had ad gains in the September issues ... here's the article: http://www.minonline.com/news/11923.html

Looks like Family Circle, In Style, Fitness, Traditional Home, and National Geographic are doing something right.

Nice link. If you need any help on the British or Chinese B2B markets let me know.

knock on wood, but Thrasher magazine is still rocking 200+ page mags every month with a very healthy ad ratio, our events are kicking ass, and we're getting great growth online and on demand for our video content... Thankfully parents still seem able to buy their kids shoes and skateboards even if they can't go on vacation or remodel their kitchen in a down economy...Juxtapoz is still doing really well too BTW...

My publication has seen advertising sales increase issue over issue for the last two years. We haven't taken a backwards step in any issue....

I have just launched a new magazine, Business Clarksville. While many in print media are sinking, our community is booming thanks to heavy investment and development in areas of alternative energy. We are the only large city in TN without a business magazine; that has changed. We are also about to launched a regional arts and heritage magazine. The trick is to find an niche, an area unfulfilled within a community, region etc, and fill that gap. Our specificity is the key to our growth.

That's great advice, Christine -- thanks so much! I really like the advice that specificity is the key to growth -- seems apt.

And thanks to everyone for their suggestions!

I have also come across a few other examples of my own, thanks to MinOnline's article on which mags fared well in September 09, which I put in a blog post here: http://commonplacesblog.wordpress.com/2009/08/25/a-few-mag-brands-f...

MinOnline named Family Circle, National Geographic, InStyle, Traditional Home and Fitness as the big winners in September for a variety of reasons. It's a great article -- you can find it here: http://www.minonline.com/news/11923.html
