Magazine & eMedia Publishing Professional & Social Network

I am starting a newsletter for my company. This newsletter would consist of everything related to Publishing - digital and print. The frequency of the newsletter, I think, should be weekly or fortnightly. Is this adequate frequency of this newsletter? This newsletter will be digital only. What do you think are the best topics to cover as far as Digital and Print Publishing is concerned Technology will also be a big part of the newsletter as means and as well as content.

Also how much do you think should the content of the newsletter be? I think too much content would discourage people from being addicted to this newsletter.

And who should my target audience be?

Sample thoughts on the content are below.

The Table of Contents can be:
News on Publishing
How the markets are shaping up
Technical Assistance: Print, Software and hardware
Industry Voice
Tips and Tricks
What is the best way to
How to market in
DIY Magazine/Newsletter/Journal
Subscription Free -

Can you provide me with your expert insight on how I should go about doing this?

Check out the Media Daily News group of newsletters. They do a great job covering the markets. I don't think there is a niche out there for you. Save your money.

As a publisher of a magazine, what we are always looking for are better processes and tools of the trade to make our jobs easier and more efficient. Periodic webinars would be good with "how to tips and good speakers". Good luck.

Rajesh, webinar is a good tip and I might want to look at it if something that needs to be fit into the scheme of things in our marketing endeavors. Thank you.

Sachin, I think that if you position the newsletter very carefully that it could work for you and the audience. Obviously, no point of doing what others have done with a broad coverage of the market. I agree on the scope of the newsletter since I personally enjoy shorter newsletters of about 4 - 5 pages which can be read online in a shorter period of time. My own personal take on the market is that you should focus on the ROI aspect of publishing, both print and digital, and how a publisher can keep costs down while maintaining quality in all aspects of publishing. Case studies on the impact of a digital newsletter from a financial perspective would be enlightening, too, I think. Hope this helps.

Jim, as always on the dot and insightful. There is a particular reason that I want to do this and it is to push my company brand so that more companies in the US and UK are more accepting to off-shoring as a valuable option. The ROI aspect is something I will look into and its one of the better advice I have received recently. Maybe you could help me with understanding the US publishing market? Thank you. and as always your advice does help. :-)

I hate the visual design of it, but creative cow does a great niche newsletter IMHO, usually leading off with one major must-read how-to feature, followed by a bunch of relevant product sales pitches ;) I think once a month is best, unless you really have fantastic and/or timely content. http://forums.creativecow.net/

My feeling with these things is that content is still king. People will just skip over things that are not interesting or relevant or somehow useful. Your list strikes me as being a bit too long. I don't think too many people will get to the end unless all the content is really compelling.

At the same time, the more frequent the distribution, the less content you need in each one, or you run the risk of overwhelming people. We have an e-newsletter that used to be biweekly but has gone monthly. How often you can do it really depends on how fast you can come up with good content. If you go weekly and pad it out with self-promotive fluff in order to have something to send, it's going to die.

Good luck. These things are just as tricky as launching a print publication.

You are right, and I agree that the list is slightly longer and vague. As an after thought, the list makes me feel, that its more of a list for magazine than newsletter. I thought, maybe one industry voice would be a good things to add here, along with, news, "what is the best way to...", "How to market...", Subscription, and product showcase. This cuts the earlier list down considerably but it also allows me to reach out to industry experts to make this a more of a contributory communication.
I would certainly love if people over here at MediaPRO volunteered to contribute with articles for the different sections I have mentioned. It would certainly help consolidate the NewsLetter's credibility. Do you think, I would find audience here that would contribute to my newsletter?

Never hurts to ask.

Thank you Tom. I will do so soon. :-)

What if instead of putting all these components into each issue, you swapped it out? It seems like a lot for a weekly digital newsletter, which you want to be a quick read. Like one week is News on Publishing, How Markets are Shaping Up, How to Market In, then the next week is Industry Voice, Tips and Tricks, DIY. It would also keep it fresher - i.e. "hey, is it time for Tips and Tricks yet?"

I think it makes sense to approach any new e-newsletters as essentially a blog that you periodically "push" out with an email, much the way that MediaPost (Media Daily News) does theirs. I agree with Chuck--most of their blog/e-newsletters are indeed excellent. I think this model is ideal in terms of SEO, content flexibility and audience-friendliness, among other things.

Do one on the future of association publishing and I'll sign up today! : )

Good luck,

Peter
