We're looking for a way to get some of our articles syndicated on high-traffic websites, something more than being picked up by google news feeds and the like (altho those are great). How does syndication -- especially the really big deals -- work today? Yahoo, MSN, even smaller players like AARP all seems to pick up stories published elsewhere (or are they partnership deals? maybe I'm asking the wrong questions). How exactly do those stories get to these sites? Bonus thanks if you can tell me how your own publication gets its articles syndicated.

We are working with a software company that has developed a CRM package for the real estate community specific to our market. Part of the suite of products the real estate end-user can choose from is a syndicated content feed from my website. They are just rolling out the effort so I am excited to see how well it is received and what kind of revenues it generates. These guys do over best-in-class software that technology and marketing savvy pros should really be draw to.

Hi Jeanie,

A bit off from your direct question but years ago, I founded a company called MagazineContent that syndicated content from magazine publishers, converted all to an XML feed and then negotiated deals directly between the publishers and Global 2000 corporations. The company was acquired by a German media company.

Once you have a mechanism to distribute, you may consider approaching the Communications Director's of large corps to see if there's interest in syndicating your content for their global intranets. We were amazed at the interest for general interest content not related to their corporate industry.

Good luck
Pierre

You've made some good arguments, but I'm sure there are people who will disagree with some points.
