If it was up to me, I would close down CNN, not to put too fine a point on it! Why would I do that? Knowing that the communications media exercise has significant influence over people’s minds, we should be more responsible and careful about what we convey. Without CNN, and for that matter, without Mr. Bush, the world would be a very different place. If CNN had adopted as part of its Mission Statement an objective also to broadcast the good news stories from around the world, the world would be a different place. If George Bush Jr. had not become President – what a bad choice by the North American people – the world would be a very different place. Can you imagine what a difference the media could make if instead of being so engrossed in repeating the negative things that happen, they dedicated some of their efforts drawing attention to the good news? If this were to happen, do you think the world would be as pre-occupied as it is today? And I use the word “pre-occupied” advisedly, because everything is subjective and a lot of news is contagious, as we see happening in different parts of the world. To be preoccupied, literally meaning “to be worried in advance” generates a negative trend with outcomes that are just the same as those that led Bush to take hasty, self interested decisions to justify the genocide and the various conflicts that he embarked on, the consequences of which we are all paying for. There is not a single such trend that has failed to invade our lives, leading us to rush into wrong decisions, redundancies that affect so many families, incorrectly interpreting information; and we shouldn’t forget that, like with Bush, these things end up in a boomerang effect that will return to us. So let’s put our best foot forward towards a better future. A future where we think about everyone, but most of all about all the good things that we have and the good that we can achieve!
