Hello. I am looking to move to Atlanta in a few years and get involved with publishing and teaching. I'm joining this group so that I can begin to make connections.

Does anyone have experience freelancing for local publications?

My company, while not shutting down, is going back to a freelance model which allows me to seek out supplemental opportunities. That's a fancy way of saying I'm looking for freelance work. Do local publications utilize freelance designers? Ours did a little at one point, but it didn't work out very well--they just weren't fast enough for us.

Hi all,

The reality of the current economic crisis became tangible on Friday -- i.e., I was laid off. I figured this would be a good group to tap for opportunities that may not be posted elsewhere. I have 20 years of experience in publishing: first in newspaper copyediting and design, and for the past 13 years in editorial design and production (all aspects of print, web and digital) for a b2b publisher.

Thanks in advance for any offers, comments and suggestions.

Best regards,
Javier

Hello all,

I am the senior editor at DDI (Display & Design Ideas) magazine, a monthly trade pub covering the design, store planning and architecture fields for retail interiors. We are based in Alpharetta, distribute nationally and cover retail projects as far as Shanghai and Dubai.

Looking forward to sharing with everyone!

I work for a small publication production company based out of Roswell. I've been with the company since 2000 and have a rather ambiguous role due to the nature of small business.

The company, DMGinc., has been around since the early 90's and was born out of the ashes of a much larger litho/prepress company that specialized in direct mail catalogs.

With an art direction/design background, I was originally brought on board as an editorial designer, however my position has been more intertwined with core production and hence, I now have more of a creative workflow management type of position.

I still do a bit of hands-on work with the publications we work with, however production management and creative workflow planning definitely make up the majority of my workload these days.

Overall, it's been a lot of fun and a lot of challenging, hard-work. I DEFINITELY prefer working for a 3rd party company versus working for an individual publication or publishing company. We have the same headaches and much of the same stress, but that 1-degree of removal is enough to make all the difference!

Hi all. I've been mainly in commercial printing and graphic design for most of 25 years. I developed and published a monthly family magazine called Inside Gwinnett for a bit over fives before i sold it in 2007 to a local media company. I'm publishing online now with several sites including: greenlifeatlanta.com and vecinosmagazine.com

I'm passionate about publishing in print and online. My experience is broadly based including actual hands on design, management and advertising sales.

It's a small world out there and networking is the best way to get ahead.

Hello! I am editor-in-chief and partner in Grape Anticipation magazine, a wine magazine dedicated to the Georgia market.

Our magazine is all about education. We work to empower the wine novice (as well as the expert) to go into the stores and be able to make confident wine purchases and learn all they wish about wine. In this vein, we have "Wine Kept Simple" articles that basically serve as a Wine 101, as well as articles written by winemakers themselves. In addition to features about international, domestic and regional wines, wineries, food and wine pairings, and everything in between, we also offer our own wine ratings, done by a panel of respected sommeliers and wine professionals. One difference in our magazine than competitors' magazines is that all of the wines featured in our content and rated are available in the state of Georgia.

In addition to the print magazine, we have recently launched an online social community, dedicated to wine enthusiasts everywhere. You can check it out at http://group.insidegrape.com. Although we're in the initial phases of this site, it's already proven to be a great resource for those wanting to learn more about wine, chat with sommeliers and experts, and engage in interesting and fun discussions about vino.

I look forward to sharing our experiences with others in this group! I have always been of the opinion that us publishing people succeed more when we congregate and share ideas. I am sure we can all learn a lot from one another and look forward to this opportunity!
