FOLIO: mediaPRO

Magazine & eMedia Publishing Professional & Social Network

Two years ago, when I started as art director for FOLIO:, I was surprised to see that the magazine was being built approximately 50% in Quark, and 50% InDesign. I guess I came aboard as InDesign was slowly being integrated and tested out as an option for the mag. Well, I had used InDesign exclusively for about 3-4 years prior to joining FOLIO:, so one of my first tasks I set for myself here was to shift the production to 100% InDesign. That was quickly done and InDesign has been my one and only love for some time now. But we all know that love can make us blind - which is why I thought to start this discussion. Am I blind to Quark's progress over the last few years? Am I wrong in believing that InDesign is the dominant layout app in our industry and anyone still clinging to Quark is only doing so for sentimental reasons?

So - which layout application is you magazine or design firm using, and why?

so, almost 3 months after the fact, I'd just like to ditto what's already been said ad nauseam. ID does some amazing things that I've always wanted to do in layout, back when I was using Quark 3; and Quark lost me as a customer with v.6, so much so that I've never been tempted to look at another version.

I was working in IT at the time when the publisher I was working for was looking to transition to OS X. My suggestion was to take a good look at InDesign (v2 at the time). They ended up (after my departure) going with Quark 4 in Classic. The now use InDesign.

When my current company made the move, we dropped Quark for ID and, as I said, I haven't looked back.

A while later, I was helping someone with Quark 6 print a magazine layout as a spread. This should have been easy. I went through every setting I could think of, and all of the ones suggested in the help files - 6 locations, if I remember correctly, where you can set your paper size - and I still could not get the layout to come out in landscape. I'm not new to debugging printing problems, but there's no way I'm going to continue to use a program that makes me do that much work for something that should be basic.

Quark 7 is good? v.8 is "woo hoo"-worthy? fine. I'm currently kicking my IT deparmtent to get CS3 (now that 4 is out) - we just got CS2 last year. "cold dead fingers" and all.
