I am curious to know about any experience that anyone has had with magazine publishing outsourcing. Publishing outsourcing has been a big business offshore for some time with journals and books and other content, but seems to be less common in the magazine industry. Would enjoy hearing any comments or observations from anyone about the topic.

Gannett's newspapers and others newspaper business are starting to outsource. So far layout, stock photos, and some general news features. What I would like to know, how large of a cost benefit, would this be?

Richard, are you talking about offshoring or outsourcing some aspects of newspaper production?

I know of some other newspapers who've outsourced bits of their production cycle, namely customer ad building and/or image-handling since those departments can get really bogged down.

But I don't know of any newspapers offshoring any of their core production simply due to the fast-paced nature of the newspaper industry.

But now that I think about it ... newspapers could theoretically benefit greatly from offshore labor since you could have production going on 24/7 which could greatly relieve some of the pressure.

But it would require a LOT of management, rules, strict guidelines, etc. and it definitely would NOT be an easy task to roll out.

I'd be real interested in learning more about what Gannett is doing with this?

I do know, that Gannett is using outsourcing for their ad design. Their has already been people lay off. I can not go into to much detail, here without risk tipping my hand off to reveal my source in Gannett> Your best sources of info, about Gannett outsourcing, is to read the stories of the employee themselves, at http://gannettblog.blogspot.com/.

Richard, Joshua, you both raise some interesting issues with newspaper outsourcing. Joshua, you are absolutely right about the issue of turn around times with newspapers as opposed to magazines since most are obviously daily, and would require very strict guidelines. One of the benefits with outsourcing that is offshore is that many companies work on 24 hour shifts so even with the time difference work can be accomplished with tight deadlines with these schedules. I would enjoy hearing more about experiences with the newspaper market.
