I'd like to hear how some of your roles have changed over the past few years, and how you see them changing in the next 3-5 years.

Are any of you still doing print-only magazine work? Are there particular skills and software you have learned, either by choice or by necessity, in order to remain a viable asset to your publishing department?

Is there really such a thing as an art role? I dunno, it seems like throughout my entire career as a designer, I've been asked, prodded, enticed and lead by circumstances to try and create better relevance for readers, clients, advertisers, the company, Web development, etc., etc. by contributing creatively to every area of the project.

I started in the pre-digital production area, but the only real difference that computerization brought was the speed and scope of multiple-hat-wearing. For me the question as a designer has always been, how do I carve out more time to just concentrate on meeting my design deadlines?

as our company has grown, personally I've been doing much more design management than actual nuts-and-bolts design over the last three years...learning basic HTML, CSS, and Flash definitely helped me communicate in the language of my web designers as we've ramped up in that area, even if I'm not the one doing the programming...It's definitely a lot easier to get what I want visually now that I know how to properly communicate what I'm looking for!

As technologies continue to emerge, I think it will be important to stay on the cutting edge of stuff like Search Engine Optimization standards and to be building things that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but can conform (and later be changed to conform to) to as-yet-undefined standards...

evolution or extinction, right?

Print is still a big part of my job, but I've found my role has changed from simply the magazine art director to art director for the magazine brand. Sometimes I'm designing online ads for the website, or print ads promoting the website. Sometimes I'm designing templates for e-newsletters, and executing them once a week. Sometimes I'm taking photos on the showfloor for our blog coverage at an industry tradeshow. My role has definitely expanded in the last few years, and I anticipate it to expand further, particularly online. Enewsletter design is definitely one avenue being explored more lately.
