Magazine & eMedia Publishing Professional & Social Network

Back in January 2009 I decided to take the initiative and start my own online magazine. The magazine has grown somewhat since then with more and more people reading the issue.

The problem I seem to have is that it is a magazine which covers areas which people today would find boring! (ah the paradox of placing an exclamation mark after the word boring)

The magazine covers politics, history, economy, science and a new segment is film (but reviews of mostly documentaries and not blockbuster films like the SLOB VIII)

I was wondering is there anyone who knows what the best way to publicise your magazine and increase the number of readers is? I have tried social site, setting up a site, word of mouth but it is still only gradual growth...am I just being impatient?

Please find attached my latest issue of QW Magazine

Hi, Mohammed,

Great mag. :) I don't think the problem is that your magazine is, as you put it, "boring." You have a niche audience and should be able to attract readers.

One thing I would definitely recommend is updating your website. It's gorgeous, but it isn't sticky. When a reader goes to your site, there's nothing for them to really do or read on the page. They have a choice of downloading the latest digital issue or clicking one of the social media buttons at the bottom. So you're basically taking readers off your site.

It's great that you have a blog, but I notice you're mostly posting links to other sites and not writing content. Blogs should provide some sort of call to action or be thought-provoking to inspire discussion. That's the great thing about the comments feature. Also, by crafting interesting posts/headlines on your blog, you're allowing potential readers/subscribers to find you from search engines.

Social media is a great way to get people interested, but it also means that you're putting the majority of your efforts into another site, not your own. I think if you focus on your website by creating a home page with content on it, providing a way for readers to become more involved and stay on your site, you'll end up creating a natural buzz and also raise your traffic rank. Once your traffic goes up and word of mouth spreads, you'll be able to spend less time and money on other things, such as advertising.

And, it does take time! But, believe it or not, it won't take too long. In our first year, WOW! went from having an Alexa rank in the millions down to 100k (the lower, the better).

Don't get discouraged. You have a great product. :) With a little extra effort, you'll be able to attract more loyal readers.
