Magazine & eMedia Publishing Professional & Social Network

Publishers are using all kinds of social networking tools to drive website traffic, but there are so many out there, how do you know which ones work?

I've seen Twitter used by Publishers and Authors, though I'm not sure it does much for Publishers other than offering them a valuable tool similar to RSS when you post your own blog posts using it. I've seen Authors however, ask for suggestions from their Twitter friends, build relationships, then slyly drop a link to their book here and there. Smart I'd say.

How are you using social media to drive traffic? (And props to FOLIO: for creating this one!)

Hi Amanda,

I believe that SN is one of the more important tools that a publisher can leverage for marketing. Specifically, to connect directly with readers.

When someone picks-up a book from a book store or Amazon, what do the publishers know about their readers? Hardly anything. Now if the publisher is able to get a direct line to the reader who has purchased or read the book, by creating say a FaceBook page for that book - that would create a micro-community of like-minded people and that is a niche, meaningful and focused SN.

Now if a publisher has such a community, then they can leverage it to sell their forthcoming titles or just to keep their readers informed about an author signing event or a book-club meetup or to even send out a survey/poll. They can even have selected people sample future titles like what Thomas Nelson is trying.

Distributed content pieces like FB updates, news feeds and book widgets can be used by readers to populate their own FB profiles. Put together, they'd form a nice marketing tool that can work as a targeted marketing channel and possibly result in up/cross-sell for the publisher.

Even if the sales do not happen immediately, there will be a long-term mind share value that the publisher can get from SN. This can be an inexpensive marketing tool - in addition to all the traditional channels currently used.

Ulhas Anand
