At Penton, we conducted reader profiles, reader preference surveys (we'd do the tests, outsource the study), brand preference studies, advertiser studies (usually brand awareness), reader sat studies and a multitude of editorial studies. We used Snap Survey Software, MS Word, and MS Excel for our analysis and reports.

We do research similar to what Jan details in her comment. Also we do a lot of secondary research using the Web to look for competitive intelligence for clients through news media and other sources. I just purchased Vovici's survey management system and am as eager as a kid on Christmas morning to start using it. We've been using Survey Monkey for questionnaire construction and getting by with its limited analytical capability. I've outsourced more complex analysis when required.
