Folio's MediaPRO site has been quite a hit and so we've decided to do some experimentation and have recently launched a Ning network for one of our newer publications.
We are still in the initial launch phase of the site and are targeting core members to assist in the sites content before inviting the masses.
Any input, advice, comments, support, critiques, etc. would be extremely helpful and much appreciated!
I like your wine site, like Folio, you have interactions with the readers, plus your doing a little bit of a market study. on the side. I a have a dummy on the table right now for a food type ( its never been done before, food subject) mag. Something like your site would be perfect, for what I have in mind. I am just wondering how expensive Ning is setting it up? Something like Myspace, and Facebook, you can get set up for almost nothing.
Next to nothing. You can get a site completely up and running for free. They have some upsell options plus there is a 3rd party company (scripts4ning) which sells enhancement scripts for ning ... For example, I'm pretty sure the point structure here on MediaPRO is coming from scripts4ning.
Really enjoying the Ning interface - very easy to use. Chris O'Brien of the San Jose Mercury News is also using it for his NextNewsroom community and its great.
Hugh McCleod a.k.a. "Gaping Void" has been "socializing" wine enthusiasts for a few years now. His effort is -- or seems -- a little more grassroots, though. That might be the key to this sort of thing or we'll be seeing more astroturfing brouhaha's like Edelman's mistake with Wal-Mart a couple of years ago.
