One of the biggest problems is finding cost-effective printing. Our printing costs are more than our revenues. Any referrals and suggestions are greatly welcomed.

I hear China prints cheaply. I'm working on relationships now.

It may be cheaper to prints in China, but would not the distribution cost out way the saving?

Reply to This

Not necessarily. Quite a few of our customers have opted to print their books and/or magazines in Asia over the years. Even with offshore printing and "slow-boating" back to the states your cost is WAY lower than domestic prices. Once the books have docked, distribution cost would work out similar to if you had printed domestically.

Your real snag will be timing. Slow-boating is the only way to make sure you keep the cost down... and it can be a real slow boat!

If you are proofing your publication I can offer a great suggestion to save money there. The company I work for (*disclosure) offers a great solution for inexpensive SWOP proofs. www.ExpressProof.com

I have heard of quite a few companies who are having their magazine printed in Spain. It might be worth checking it out.

BTW A good source of advice is inPublishing magazine www.inpublishing .co.uk

I have a magazine and website, which is not new. I just purchased it. My biggest problem is finding sales people.

Capital, Solid Management Team, Circulation/Advertising...

First capital, is hard to raise? The SBA will not even loan money for a magazine,(or newspaper for that matter)In publishing a magazine, you only need one solid Management person, "THE PUBLISHER"! Get the circulation numbers,( and control costs) with a good editorial product, and the ads will come.

Even with strong numbers and great content, there are still plenty of other avenues your advertisers can take. There's only a select few titles out there who can sit back and wait for the advertisers to come to them. A strong sales effort is very important.

I totally agree, Joshua. I created a great magazine called Banktown U$A for a publisher in Charlotte NC. It's on my site, www.littleshiva.com if you want to look. It folded after three issues for lack of advertising, but there was little to no effort put into that. Pity.

Yes I agree Joshua, a strong sales effort is important, but you need a good editorial product, to back your sales forced.
