What do you feel is the biggest problems, facing someone who want to start their own magazine?

So many people have the "build it, and they will come" mentality. Better to start from a "Can I secure advertising support, so I can build it" should be the starting point.

I've never started a magazine without making personal visits and phone calls to potential advertisers to see if A) there is a need in the marketplace for the concept/title and B) if I can count on their dollars, not just their lip service.

How did you go about making these personal visits and phone calls to potential advertisers if you did not have a product? Did you already have contacts with potential advertisers or did you just contact "cold turkey"? I ask because I am in the process of starting a publication and I do know how hard it is to raise capital for publishing a magazine, especially print and in this economy. I thank you in advance for any suggestions you have. :)

Old fashion cold calling, and/or using my network to have introductions set up for me.

printing costs and distribution, especially for a publication with a small run of copies.
