BACKGROUND SUMMARY

Involved in business-to-business publishing for more than 30 years. Started career with Intertec Publishing, was one of five people to leave the company to found their own company/magazine. Published the magazine for 10 years before selling it to what was then United Entertainment Media. Worked with UEM for five years as an independent sales rep and employee before returning to Intertec Publishing (now Penton Media). For 12 years, worked as publisher/group publisher of from two to five publications. During the past 2-1/2 years, worked as president of the Allied Healthcare Division of Ascend Media.

During 2-1/2 years at Allied, took online revenue from $67K in 2005 to $1.42M in 2007. Completely restructured the sales and editorial teams, while starting marketing and ad production departments. Finished 2007 with a division pub profit of $6.1M on $16M in sales. During 12 years at PBI, launched new magazines, conferences and online (about $1.5M for three magazines) projects. Transitioned T&D World magazine from long-time publisher in 2005 while increasing revenue by mid-single digit growth and maintaining its high profitability.

EXPERIENCE

Allied Healthcare Division of Ascend Media
President, Los Angeles, CA, December 2005 to May 2008
Lead a group of 14 magazine titles in the healthcare industry and 65 employees. When arriving at Allied, three magazines had no web sites and the entire division only did $67K in online revenue. By the end of 2007, Allied’s online sales hit $1.42M. As of May, 2008, online revenue is pacing at a 15% increase over 2007. Through restructuring sales and editorial, creating marketing and ad production departments, and a lot of cheerleading, was able to maintain a division pub profit about 40% during his tenure, all at a time when B2B print pages were falling through the floor. His formula for success: introduction of a full menu of online products; increased emphasis on custom publishing; increased sales travel for face-to-face customer calls; and research across the entire division’s products.

PBI, Inc. (now Penton Media, formerly also known as Intertec Publishing and Primedia Business)
Group Publisher, Overland Park, KS, May 1993 to November 2005.
Originally hired to handle two magazines, oversaw as many as five publications during his 12 years. Returned a once dominant publication to the forefront of the industry and transformed it into one of PBI’s most successful products, performing at a 40% publishing profit. Also re-launched several magazines, online initiatives, an international show daily, conferences and many special projects. Traveled extensively both domestically and internationally from 90-125 days per year to support products and sales. During his last year, maintained profitability of primary product and increased market share of other products in difficult and competitive markets. In addition, assumed the publishing responsibilities of a long-time publisher who left the company on another of PBI’s leading publications. By year-end 2005, total online billings in the group exceeded $1.2M and represented approximately 11% of total revenue.
