I think it's too fragmented, there is too much "noise" and somehow there has to "re-aggregation of the fragmentation" - RSS overload, too many social networks, blogs etc. There are some companies working on such aggregation. Getting to the quality content is becoming harder - yet at the same time you want to leverage the "wisdom of the crowd". I don't totally support Andrew Keen "The Cult of the Amateur" but there are aspects that do I agree with. The current search engines while improving are really inadequate - I don't think so much dependance on "popularity" is the way to go - the systems are being games - witness Digg - and how a small group of influences can determine popular content - the filters have to be more complex (of course Google does not tell us how they set the variables ! ) The role of "editors" or content is critical - I remain fascinated as to what a new media company looks like in a world of search, social networking and fragmentation of content and audiences.
