Over at AviationWeek.com, we have had a photo contest going for quite a while. Used to be a huge issue that had a ton of print ads, less so now.
I agree with trying to sell sponsorship ...
sell corporate sponsorship of the contest, put whatever monies you get back into it and think of it all as a great branding/marketing experience, not necessarily a big money maker...
