I just came back from Columbia, where I met with Randy Covington at Ifra Newsplex and had dinner with Doug Fisher, one of the j-school profs and co-author of Principles of Convergent Journalism. I did quite a bit of freelancing myself prior to going back to working full time for someone else. I still work from home, however. And that's great, wouldn't you agree? Duties included developing editorial budget, assigning articles, working with the art director on design/photography, and seeing the magazine through to publication. Non-magazine duties included writing news releases, website content, and internal newsletter features. Additional responsibilities included coordinating the annual report and writing the shareholder letter, writing speeches for the CEO, writing advertisement copy, creative direction for special publications, and developing creative concepts for sales support, trade shows, and internal communications.
