If I want to buy a car from Toyota, I can choose from a Corolla, Camry or Lexus. If I go on vacation, I can book a Fairfield Inn, Courtyard by Marriott or JW Marriott, all from the same hotel operator. But if I'm an advertiser and want to buy space from a magazine publisher, I have only one choice.
B2B publishers don't offer a good-better-best option. They could. Magazine publishers force advertisers to buy their entire circulation. That's like Macy's making me buy one of everythin…

The
Times reports today that job seekers outnumber job openings by six to one, the worst ratio since the Labor Department started tracking this statistic in 2000. I
coach many people who are part of that job-seeking group. My clients are getting jobs faster than their competition even in a worsening environment. Here are just a few…

Video Sponsorships
It's pretty dark out here in the media world. Does anybody think we'll be getting to the "just before dawn" part soon? The economic sky is still very black, but some in our business are gazing at what might be a glow on the horizon.
That glow is Content Via Video and it may just be our industry's next shining star. Unlike most Internet advertising strategies, sponsoring content presented online via video may be an ad strategy for which internet advertisers will trade more th…

It’s More Than Just Layout
Many who are starting a new magazine move too quickly into the creative phase. I suspect this is the case because most people who have the desire to launc…

Reading the Times Higher Education
article on the struggles of finding expert reviewers for grant proposals brings to mind the same old problems facing academic publications and managing editors.
"We are teetering on the brink of the system breaking down," said Nigel Brown, former director of science and technology at the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and now vice-p…

Mission Critical
Would you ever drive your car with a bag over your head? If you did, it sure would be a challenging ride. You would get lost. You may veer off of the road or cross the yellow lines into som…

So this weekend I will be attending a film festival for an assignment, and I will have to interview organizers, contestants, viewers, etc. to gain their perspective on the event. I've done one face to face interview before, but since it was with a friend of mine for a college assignment I don't consider it to be relevant experience. Thus, I have no experience with face to face interviewing. Are there any pointers that anyone can give me before the festival this Sunday, April 26? Anything and eve…

Lots of publishing people are starting their own businesses--necessity being the mother of invention. So you may be interested in my blog post from earlier this week.
In the small business I own, I’ve noticed an ebb and flow through the years–periods when I am really “on it” and other times when I am either coasting or not as engaged as I need to be. Fortunately, I’ve been very…

Last weeks often contrarian Economist made a cautiously optimistic case that the US Economy is improving. The article ticked through housing, economic data, and stocks to find positive signs in each. I recommend printing out and sharing this article with all your clients. There has been plenty of bad economic news, as sales professionals our mission must be to bring forward the positive.
Here are highlights from those three areas:
The housing bubble:
"The current recession has broken many of…

Recently I blogged about the shift that’s occurring in the outlook of New Entrepreneurs–and by New, I mean entrepreneurs who have started ventures in the post-Bubble economy of the past six-12 months. (We need a name for this new world order. Any suggestions?) I reached out to my network to find examples of what’s changing, and got a wide and interesting response. One of my old colleagues from CMP Media got in touch and we had a fascinating conversation. Seth Nichols has been vice president of d…

This topic was created for two reasons.
First, I'll be giving this presentation in Helsinki, Finland next week for their 2009 Customer Magazines Symposium.
Second, I was inspired by the book, The Ten Commandments for Business Failure, written by former Coca-Cola CEO Donald Keough (good book by the way). After reading, I thought it would be interesting to look at custom magazines in this way.
So here's the quick overview. To be sure, if you follow any of these commandments, your custom magazin…

Did a post about this on my regular blog - I was at the OMMA conference this week, filled with marketers and advertisers, all talking about where they're going to be shifting their budgets. Which means, which news & entertainment outlets are going to still be around in five years.
Jason Calacanis, the digital provocateur & founder of Blogging and Mahalo, basically said that newspaper are responsible for their own demise, and good riddance: http://www.artesianmedia.com/blog/2009/03/newsp…

I just turned 18 again--now a legal adult, but still too young to have the REAL fun that 21 year olds have. Except I'm 23, recently graduated college, and ready to take on the world of editing and publishing...and yet despite my numerous skills and endless job search efforts, I am not "experienced enough" to be offered any of the editorial positions for which I have applied thus far. Pair this with our current recession and the window of hope nearly closes on my dream.
Like most college undergr…

These days, I am finding new “mom.com” businesses more and more frequently. An exceptional one I learned of about six months ago is MitzvahMarket.com. As some of you know, in addition to being a coach, I own a specialty-catering company providing smoothie and coffee bars for parties and events, including bar and bat mitzvahs. The bar/bat mitzvah market has been a fairly traditional one for many years and the media available to party planners and vendors in the space has been absolutely dreadful.…
