Adding my articles as blogs

I have decided to load each article I have written as an individual blog entry. I felt that this was a good idea for others to see what I've written to provide feedback, as well as for potential employers to view writing samples on Folio: MediaPRO (think online portfolio). My first article about an organization called TRIgirls was already entered as a blog entry entitled "First article published--feedback welcomed and encouraged!" Feel free to comment with anything you like. If you think it was… Continue

Intern and Learn

As my internship comes to an end today, I want to reflect over the past 4.5 months and share what I have learned about writing, editing, interviewing, and photography. 1. Get a Bluetooth headset with your phone, or a landline phone that has amazing an speakerphone. Holding a phone between your ear and your shoulder during phone interviews causes extreme pain and several colonies of knots in your upper back. 2. Always make contact with the person you have to interview right away. If you pro… Continue

Richmond Ad Club: My new networking hotspot

Tonight I went to Gibson's to attend the Richmond Ad Club's meeting, and I must say that I am SO glad I went. Lately I have been feeling pretty down on myself because my job search efforts have yielded no results (how does someone young get experience if no one will give her the opportunity to gain experience??? My everlasting career catch-22). Oh wait, one result: a "Dear John"--or in my case, "Dear Miss Rinker"--letter informing me that the position has been filled. Not to say that I haven't b… Continue

From intern to job seeker

Come August 31 my internship with Palari Publishing, LLP here in Richmond, VA will be over and I will once again be looking for a full-time job, well, full-time. I have found a few positions here in Richmond in the publishing industry and have applied for them, but who knows what may come of those. I have my fingers crossed but my hope down in an attempt to be realistic about the current job market and to avoid feeling crushed. Is anyone else currently unemployed? What are you doing to search f… Continue

First article published--feedback welcomed and encouraged!

I have recently published my first article in a local Richmond, Virginia magazine called Sports Backers Quarterly. The article is about a local organization called TRIgirls, a group of women who train together for triathlons. If you would like to read it, visit here: Click on the current issue (purple cover) and scroll to pages 12-13. My editor said it was great and that he didn't change much, but since I don't have much experience in journalism I would gre… Continue

Interview Dos and Donts--your suggestions are welcome!

So this weekend I will be attending a film festival for an assignment, and I will have to interview organizers, contestants, viewers, etc. to gain their perspective on the event. I've done one face to face interview before, but since it was with a friend of mine for a college assignment I don't consider it to be relevant experience. Thus, I have no experience with face to face interviewing. Are there any pointers that anyone can give me before the festival this Sunday, April 26? Anything and eve… Continue

Career update

So my foot is in the door! I have taken the very first step in pursuing my career in publishing--an internship with Palari Publishing in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia (which is perfect...I have to stay near home due to an illness in my family). The internship involves writing for the three magazines that Palari publishes: Urge, Work Magazine, and Sports Backers Quarterly. It all happened very fast--a chance finding of an ad for the internship on Craigslist, completing and submitting my appli… Continue

Career Catch-22

I just turned 18 again--now a legal adult, but still too young to have the REAL fun that 21 year olds have. Except I'm 23, recently graduated college, and ready to take on the world of editing and publishing...and yet despite my numerous skills and endless job search efforts, I am not "experienced enough" to be offered any of the editorial positions for which I have applied thus far. Pair this with our current recession and the window of hope nearly closes on my dream. Like most college undergr… Continue
