Entrepreneurs Reinvigorate a Tired Media Market

These days, I am finding new “mom.com” businesses more and more frequently. An exceptional one I learned of about six months ago is MitzvahMarket.com. As some of you know, in addition to being a coach, I own a specialty-catering company providing smoothie and coffee bars for parties and events, including bar and bat mitzvahs. The bar/bat mitzvah market has been a fairly traditional one for many years and the media available to party planners and vendors in the space has been absolutely dreadful. Until Sheri and Erica came onto the scene. Their intelligent, unique newsletter is gaining hundreds of subscribers a week and I am convinced they will far surpass their business goals in the next few years.
Sheri Lapidus is a public relations executive who has worked at NBC-TV, CBS-TV, In Style and ELLE magazine. Erica Salmon is a successful working mom who created the Internet start-up FantasyFashionLeague.com, the fashionista’s answer to fantasy football. I have become a big ban of MitzvahMarket.com because i believe it has reinvigorated an important media niche and will redefine it. Sheri responded to my questions about her business:

1. What is MitzvahMarket.com all about and why did you start it?

MitzvahMarket.com is the home of Mitzvah Mail, a free email newsletter designed for all Bar/Bat Mitzvah planning families. We are a new resource delivering clever, useful and entertaining ideas to make “Mitzvah” planning more fun and less stressful. We also profile Mitzvah kids and their projects bringing inspiration to other families and awareness to the organizations that benefit.

My idea for MitzvahMarket.com began when I started planning for my daughter’s Bat Mitzvah. It seemed the only valuable and reliable source of information was “mom-to-mom” advice. I thought there should be a Website that was organized, accessible and could feature all my friend’s unique insights into Bar/Bat Mitzvah planning. After lots of research and discussion with my business partner Erica Salmon, our business idea launched.
