Personal Interests
I love love love print. I have a strong belief that gummie bears cure the worst Monday blues. I have a horrible habbit of collecting writing utensils, club fliers, business cards, and of course magazines. I hope to one day work in a magazine company as a graphic designer and grow with the company. I am big on family and karma. "Good things come to those who work hard and are good at heart."
Hi Catreena! Sorry for my delayed response -- life has been crazy and I think I've hit the limit for how many social networks one person can be involved in!!! I agree whole-heartedly with what Josh said below -- MAGS, this particular site could prove to be tremendously helpful, and any other professional networks you can join. You may also want to look into some of the other regional niche magazines -- they often are in need of a good designer to do redesigns and to create an online presence. You seem to have a lot of great experience. While we currently do not have any positions available, I will keep your information and let you know when we do. Keep in touch!

MAGS has been great. Many of our clients are involved with MAGS and several of them (including the wine guys) go to some of their events here-and-there. I've heard good things about their events.
I'm not sure how well it will work out for an individual, but as a vendor / Atlanta-based publisher ... they've been a great resource for information and connections.

I couldn't help but notice your comment about Grape Anticipation magazine. I work for the Roswell-based company that designs and produces that magazine for InsideGrape and although we rarely have any positions open, our doors are always open for networking!
As others have pointed out ... intern if possible, continue to knock on doors, network and connect.
If you search for "Atlanta" here on MediaPRO you'll find quite a few other professionals in the Atlanta area alone. I'm hoping the Atlanta publishing group will eventually be a place to help connect both local industry experts as well as those new to the industry ... although, it definitely has a ways to go =) .
You should also check out MAGS (Magazine Association of Georgia and the Southeast and see if there are any public events, information or ways for you to connect through them.
And don't forget to do your homework =D ! Your own work can always be pushed, refined and matured. Make sure to stay current with any trends, brands and even non-endemic products (magazines) with similar demographics as the ones your working on or wish to work on.
Finally, don't forget that publishing is an extremely broad field.
There are plenty of trade publications, business-to-business, journals, local mags (I mean real local ... Decatur Living, Cherokee Post, etc.) that may have opportunities for you to connect, as well. They may not be all that glamourous, but they can definitely be a gateway!
Welcome to MediaPRO!! Looking forward to connecting with you and Networking. I am always looking for people who are strong in print design... I have major online people - Print is often the missing piece! Connect -
"can you give me some tips on the magazine industry?"
intern before you take a job if possible; enthusiasts with passion make better magazines than classicly trained writers with no deep knowledge + love of the subject matter; don't burn bridges — it's a small world; do one thing really well + people will notice...
"im straight out of college with a fresh idea for a new magazine."
start a website instead, add a print component later or if you REALLY want, or start off as a boutique print item (zine?) with a limited run (investment) ala Arkitip magazine, Sneakerfreaker etc
"what will be my biggest investment?"
time + sanity for sure...paper + circulation if you go traditional print, rocket scientists cost money if you go digi...
Commercial Use Limitations: Use of any content features (blogs, forums, messaging, etc) for direct self-promotion, spamming, etc. will result in account termination. Profiles are for individuals only at this time, not companies. Profile headshots should not include company logos. Publishing/Media companies (non vendors) may create groups for their employees. Vendors see this post for more information.
